Information about past programs in Japan

There have been five PAHSA Short-term Programs that have taken place in Japan for students from the Southeast Asia partner universities. These intensive courses, with around 15 lectures (including field trips) comprised of general lectures on peace and human security issues and specialized lectures, reflected on the particular areas of expertise of the hosting universities.

Inaugural short-term study program 2012

The Osaka University Short-term Study Program 2012 took place from 13-23 February 2012, at Osaka School of International Public Policy, Osaka University (OSIPP). The inaugural short-term study program on peace and human security invited 10 students from partners institutions. It was an intensive course with around 15 lectures (including fieldtrips), and comprised of an overview lectures on peace and human security, a particular area of expertise of OSIPP.

Second short-term study program

The Graduate School of International Cultural Studies, Meio University, Okinawa, Japan, hosted a short-term study program for 10 students from partner institutions from 6-20 August 2012. Located in the south of Japan, Meio University was able to offer unique expertise in particular areas, especially those related to peace studies and other security issues. As well as classroom lectures, there were also study trips to view American bases and peace camps.

Third short-term study program

The Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation (IDEC), Hiroshima University, hosted a two-week short-term study program on peace and human security for students from the Southeast Asian University consortium partners. The program ran from 4-14 August 2013. Students on the program attended lectures and went on field trips. This was an important timeframe for Hiroshima as it encompassed the period when Japan marked the 68th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima with a somber ceremony that the students attended.

Fourth short-term study program

The Nagasaki Short Study Program took place 09-19 February 2015, at Nagasaki University, Japan for students from the six consortium partner universities in Southeast Asia. The title of the program was "Human Security and Global Health: Lessons from Nagasaki, Japan. Students were offered a unique opportunity to learn comprehensively about some of the critical issues that affect peace and human security in Nagasaki and its neighboring areas.

Fifth short-term study program

OSIPP, Osaka University, Japan, hosted a short-term study program for 11 international students from PAHSA consortium university partners in January 2016. It was the fifth (and last) PAHSA short program in Japan. During the program there were classroom lectures, an international symposium, and also study trips to places of interest.
